Knuckles the Echidna

 

Knuckles the Echidna is an anthropomorphic 16-year-old red echidna and the current guardian of the Master Emerald, a powerful ancient relic which is his solemn duty to protect from anyone who wants to abuse it. He is also the sole remaining descendant of the Knuckles Clan and last of the echidnas on earth. His dominant traits are his superhuman strength, and the two spike-like knuckles on each of his hands, from which his name is derived from, which he can use to dig with and climb up walls with ease. He can also trap the wind under his dreadlocks to glide through the air.

A loner by nature, Knuckles is independent, headstrong and serious, yet gullible and short-tempered to a fault. He is fully devoted to his duty, spending most of his time on Angel Island protecting the Master Emerald, and rarely cares for anything that is not important. When his friends and others are in need of his help, however, Knuckles can always be relied on being willing to leave his post and prove himself a true and good-hearted hero. He is also one of Sonic's oldest friends and rivals.

However, he and Sonic did not get along very well when they first met. After Dr. Robotnik had tricked him into thinking that Sonic, Elsa, Anna, and Tails were coming to steal the Master Emerald, Knuckles immediately knocked Sonic off of his feet at first sight and stole all the Chaos Emeralds, because the Master Emerald is the one that controls the Chaos Emeralds. As the old saying went, "The servers are the Seven Chaos. Chaos is power, power enriched by the heart. The controller is the one who seeks to unify the Chaos." Repeatedly he tried to ambush Sonic and ended up being defeated each time. However, when Sonic and Tails went up to the Death Egg to defeat Robotnik (Sonic liked to call him Eggman), Elsa and Anna stayed behind and tried to convince Knuckles that the doctor was not telling the truth. The echidna then went to try and find the Master Emerald, which was now in pieces.

At another place, he ended up having a showdown with Sonic, and lost again. But this time, he was ready to accept the fact that Dr. Eggman had duped him. Immediately, he led Anna, Elsa, Sonic, and Tails to the shrine of the Master Emerald, but when they got there, the Chaos Emeralds were gone. He then said that he would stay and find the other pieces of the Master Emerald and restore Angel Island's nesting grounds in the heavens, for he said later on, "The Master Emerald is the one thing that keeps Angel Island hovering in the air. It can't while it's shattered."

After Eggman's defeat, he then left with Sonic and Tails, but as Anna and Elsa left for Arendelle, he said that he would try and keep Sonic on his toes if possible, and he stayed with Sonic and Tails ever since then, unless he had duties on Angel Island to do. A couple of weeks later, the Master Emerald shattered when Chaos formed, but with a little bit of help and hard work, he retrieved all the pieces and restored Angel Island. However, because Chaos was not in the Master Emerald, the island kept falling down. After Sonic ended up defeating him in a flooded Station Square in his Super Sonic form, he returned to the Master Emerald with Tikal.

Five years later, he came to Arendelle to see what was going on with Sonic's sisters. However, when he entered the portal, unbeknown to him, Angel Island was transported into Arendelle's world. As soon as the earthquake struck, the Master Emerald shattered into five large pieces, but using his power as the Green Mystic Ranger, he was able to retrieve them again, with the help of Amy, Blaze, Sonic, Shadow, and Udonna (Cosmo). He continued to battle against the Master's minions, but he was not alone. As soon as the team finally defeated him in his final form of Lyric, he went back to Arendelle and stayed with them for the rest of his life.
